PLANTS WITH A PURPOSE
- My guest today is Mary Ogle of A New Leaf. Mary has been the CEO of A New Leaf since 2011 and has grown the company from a $500,000 operation to a $5M operation. A New Leaf is a local nonprofit organization that promotes independence for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They do this by providing job skills, life skills, workforce placement, residential services, and other support. They began by providing horticultural-related job training and have since expanded into a variety of different fields. They currently serve over 300 individuals through employment in six greenhouses, three retail centers, and community job sites.
WHAT WE DISCUSS
- Mary and I discuss her educational and professional background, and how her passion for working with nonprofits was ignited by her backpacking trip in Europe. She shares about the early days of her career as the CEO of Red Cross. We discuss the story of how A New Leaf began in the 1970s with the Burnstein family. You’ll hear her share about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), definitions of intellectual and developmental disabilities, and the importance of looking at the person first, rather than their disability. We end by discussing volunteer opportunities that are available with A New Leaf and the exciting housing community coming in the near future.
