9. THIS IS Gregg Conway of the Tulsa Boys' Home

SERVING OKLAHOMA'S BOYS

  • My guest today is Gregg Conway, Executive Director of the Tulsa Boys' Home. Founded in 1918, and Located on a 160-acre site in west Tulsa County, Tulsa Boys' Home was the first and remains the largest residential treatment facility serving troubled boys in Oklahoma. They provide residential services to 64 boys between the ages of 12 and 18. Forty of the boys are placed by the Child Welfare Division of DHS, and the other 24 are privately placed by their parents or legal guardians.

WHAT WE DISCUSS

  • Gregg and I start by discussing his early childhood influences, his immigrant background, and his stint in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He shares how his family eventually left Long Island, New York, and ended up in Tulsa in the ’70s. He tells about starting Operation Aware, a drug prevention program for elementary school kids, and how this led to meeting with Nancy Reagan in the 1980s. You’ll hear about the journey through social work and fostering children that eventually brought him to the Tulsa Boys' Home 24 years ago.
